All candy is being donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver. Kohrs Orthodontics will also donate $1 to Smiles Change Lives for every pound of candy that is collected! Smiles Change Lives promotes and provides access to essential orthodontic treatment for children from low-income families. We'll be collecting candy at our Aurora office on Tuesday, November 1st and Thursday, November 3rd from 9am to 6pm. We'll be at our Strasburg office on Wednesday, November 2nd from 2:30pm to 5pm. Ingenuity Orthodontic Marketing presents "Great Smiles," a Kohrs Orthodontics contest! This contest provides an opportunity for Kohrs Orthodontics patients to show off their brilliant smiles, share their stories with friends and family, and win some cool prizes.

Looking for a healthy alternative to all those sweets collected around Halloween? Smiles Change Lives is hosting a Candy Exchange at Kohrs Orthodontics on Sunday, November 1st. Here's how it works: Kids surrender some of their candy in exchange for a goody bag and a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card. The event is free and open to the public. All of the candy collected will be donated to The Children’s Hospital, and Kohrs Orthodontics will make a donation to Smiles Change Lives equivalent to the weight of candy collected. The more you bring, the more you help this local charity in its mission of bracing kids for a better future, and the more Colorado kids will gain access to orthodontic treatment. Now that’s a “grin-grin” situation!

We are excited and proud to announce that Kohrs Orthodontics' sponsored softball team, the 2009 12U CGSA All-Stars, have advanced from a league tournament championship, to an undefeated sweep of the state tournament, and after succes at the Midwest Plains Regional tournament, the team is now heading to the 12U Babe Ruth World Series!

The cherry to top off the Midwest Plains Regional tournament was an announcement that Dani K. would receive the Commissioner's Award. Way to go! Dani is not only a patient at Kohrs Orthodontics, but is also the daughter of clinical assistant Christy K.

The All-Stars will be the first team ever to represent the southeast Denver league and just the 3rd team from Colorado ever to advance to the World Series. They will be one of ten teams to represent regions from across the United States.

Congratulations girls! Have a safe trip and best of luck in North Carolina!

Bad Breath Got You Down? - Aurora, CO Orthodontist

Bad breath can be a real downer, especially when you are out on a date with that girl or boy you’ve had a crush on all semester! However, bad breath can be prevented!

Bad breath, or as your doctor may call it “halitosis,” is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grows in your mouth. This bacteria gathers on bits of food in your mouth and between your teeth and release sulfur compounds making your breath smell. Some foods, like garlic and onions, may contribute more to bad breath because of oils the food the food releases, and smoking is also a major cause of bad breath.

There are several myths around bad breath. Here are some common myths and the truth behind it all:

Myth #1: Mouthwash will make my breath smell better

Mouthwash will make your breath smell better, but it is only a temporary fix. If you use mouthwash, just know that you will still need to brush and floss when you get the chance as mouthwash alone will not kill all of the bacteria producing germs in your mouth. When choosing a mouthwash, pick an antiseptic with plaque-reducing compounds. Also make sure any dental products you choose comes with the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of approval!

Myth #2: I brush my teeth; I will never have bad breath

Brushing your teeth will save you from having breath, but the truth is most people only brush their teeth for about 30-45 seconds! You need to brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes, twice a day to give your teeth a thorough cleansing. It’s also important to brush your tongue, which is where a majority of odor causing bacteria like to hang out. Lastly, flossing to remove food and plaque between the teeth will also help reduce your chances of having bad breath!

Myth #3: If I don’t smell it, then my breath is fresh

This is a false assumption in every sense of the word! The truth is that the breath you breathe out is not the same breath coming out when you talk to someone. When you breathe you are not using your throat as you do when you are talking; and when you talk more breath moves over the back of your mouth where bacteria is causing bad breath.

#1 TRUTH: Brush your teeth twice a day (for at least 2 minutes), floss at least once and visit your dentist every six months…this way your breath will always be fresh! Not letting your nerves get the best of you on your date? That’s up to you!!!

Are There Teeth Grinders in Your House? - Dr. Keith Kohrs

Grind, grind, grind, grind. If you live with a teeth grinder, especially a night grinder, you may be familiar with this unpleasant sound. Other symptoms of teeth grinding (technically called “bruxism”) include:

• Sensitivity in the teeth
• Tightness or pain in the jaw
• Dull headaches, earaches, or facial pain
• Chipped, worn down, or loose teeth

People frequently grind their teeth in response to stress, so taking measures to reduce or eliminate stress can help solve the problem. Here are some things you can try to stop grinding:

• Cut back on caffeine and alcohol
• Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
• Relax right before bedtime with a warm bath or shower
• Help your jaw learn to relax by quitting any chewing habits (pens, pencils, gum)
• When clenching or grinding happens during the day, place your tongue between your teeth to serve as a reminder to avoid the habit

If grinding goes untreated, it can lead to chipped teeth, worn enamel, chronic pain, or even TMJ, a painful jaw disorder. If the teeth-grinder in your house can’t stop, make an appointment to see us by calling 303.750.3660. Dr. Kohrs can help determine the cause of the problem and possibly even prescribe a custom mouthpiece to help break the habit.

Are you brushing your teeth twice a day? If yes, that’s great; but, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit the dentist every six months in addition to your regular orthodontic visits. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth

During an oral exam the doctor will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment!

When Are Two Phases of Treatment Necessary?

Usually patients in orthodontic treatment already have their permanent teeth – they are pre-teens, teens and adults. But in some cases we have to start treatment earlier, even before the patient’s permanent teeth come in. We call this “two-phase treatment.”

When we have patients with clear developmental problems at an early age, it’s best to start work when they are young, before the problems get bigger and more difficult to treat.

Examples include:
• An upper or lower jaw that is not growing correctly
• A mouth growing in a way that doesn’t leave enough room for all the permanent teeth to come in
• A severe malocclusion, or bad bite, which means the jaw doesn’t fit together correctly

In these cases we will start early and do one round of treatment – phase one – while the patient still has their baby teeth. Phase one usually does not involve braces, but can include a different type of appliance that helps the jaw grow into place properly. We’ll follow up with phase two usually a few years later, when permanent teeth are in place. Generally phase two involves standard braces.

In order to catch early problems, we recommend that children have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven (and so does the American Association of Orthodontics). However, if your dentist or pediatrician sees any sign that early treatment might be necessary, he or she may recommend your child visit our office even sooner.

Toothbrush Trivia!

People have been brushing their teeth for thousands of years! In fact, the first “toothbrush” was created around 3000BC! Ancient civilizations used a thin twig with a frayed edge to rub against their teeth for cleaning.

The first toothbrush with bristles – similar to today’s toothbrushes – was invented in 1498 in China. Brushes were made out of bone or bamboo with bristles made from the hairs on the back of a hog’s neck.

It wasn’t until 1938 that the first nylon bristle toothbrush was introduced and people quickly became aware of practicing good oral hygiene.

Here are some other interesting facts about your toothbrush (and toothpaste):

• Most people are said to use blue toothbrushes over any other color
• The first toothpaste was used in 500 BC in China and India
• On average, children smile about 400 times per day
• Your toothbrush should be replaced every two months
• The first known toothpaste was used in 1780, Crest was introduced in the US in 1955 and Colgate in 1873

Sleep Apnea

Are you drowsy during the day with no explanation? Do you snore loudly, or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? If so, you may be one of more than twelve million Americans affected by sleep apnea.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops periodically during sleep, as many as 20-30 times per hour. ("Apnea" is the Greek word for "without breath.") If you suffer from sleep apnea, each time your breathing stops, the resulting lack of oxygen alerts your brain, which temporarily wakes you up to restart proper breathing. Because the time spent awake is so brief, most people with sleep apnea don't remember it - and many think they are getting a good night's sleep. However, the constant wake-sleep-wake-sleep cycle precludes the deep sleep that refreshes the body, and sufferers are frequently drowsy during the day.

What are the signs of sleep apnea?

The following symptoms can indicate the presence of sleep apnea. If you notice one or more of these, give us a call, and we can refer you to a sleep apnea specialist.

Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
Loud snoring at night
Waking up at night short of breath
Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
Headaches upon waking in the morning
Falling asleep unintentionally during the day
Extreme drowsiness throughout the day

Are there different types of sleep apnea?

There are three categories of sleep apnea. The most common is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and occurs due to a physical blockage, usually the collapsing of the soft tissue in the back of the throat. Less common is central sleep apnea (CSA), in which breathing stops because the muscles involved don't receive the proper signal from the brain. And some people suffer from "mixed" or "complex" sleep apnea, which is a combination of obstructive and central.

What are risk factors for sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea is more common in males than females, and more common in older adults (40 and up) than younger adults and children. However, anyone – regardless of gender or age – can suffer from sleep apnea. Other risk factors include obesity, smoking, drinking, use of sedatives or tranquilizers, high blood pressure, and family history. Central sleep apnea strikes most often in people with heart disorders, neuromuscular disorders, strokes, or brain tumors. It is also more common in males.

Is sleep apnea dangerous?

Sleep apnea is considered a serious medical problem and if left untreated can lead to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart failure and stroke. The ongoing state of fatigue caused by sleep apnea can lead to problems at work or school, as well as danger when operating cars or other heavy machinery. Sleep apnea can also cause complications with medication or surgery: sedation by anesthesia can be risky, as can lying flat in bed after an operation. If you know or suspect you suffer from sleep apnea, alert any doctors who prescribe medication or advise surgery.

How is sleep apnea treated?

Treatments range widely and depend on the severity of the problem and the type of apnea. Basic treatment can be behavioral - for instance, patients are instructed to lose weight, stop smoking, or sleep on their sides instead of on their backs. Beyond that, oral devices can be used to position the mouth in such a way that prevents throat blockage. In more severe cases, surgery may be the best option.

What should I do if I suspect that someone in my family suffers from sleep apnea?

Give us a call, and we can refer you to a sleep apnea specialist. The specialist may recommend a "sleep study" to diagnose the precise extent of the problem, and can prescribe appropriate treatment. Depending on your situation, treatment may involve an oral device that we can custom-create for you.

Eating with Braces: Foods to Avoid

Eating with Braces

What can you eat? Let's talk about what you shouldn't eat! If you've been wanting to drop a few pounds, the first week wearing braces is just your chance! For the first day or so, stick to soft foods. Avoid tough meats, hard breads, and raw vegetables. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods to Avoid

Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
Sticky foods: caramels, gum
Hard foods: nuts, candy
Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots
Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

Retainer Instructions

Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise.
Take your retainers out when eating… and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used, but do not take the place of brushing.
When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them!
Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster.
Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken call us immediately.
If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or your retainers need adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust them yourself.
Always bring your retainers to your appointments.
Retainer replacement is expensive… with proper care they will last for years!
Remove retainers when swimming.
Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.

Your First Visit

The first visit my office is a relaxed discussion
of the patients’ orthodontic diagnosis and potential
orthodontic treatment. At this visit, a complete medical
and dental history, as well as a clinical examination will
take place. I will also provide information
regarding the likely treatment options for the patient, the
expected treatment time and the estimated treatment
cost. The first appointment at my office is
complimentary and serves as an opportunity for the
patient to find out more about orthodontics and the
treatment options available. At your discretion, we will complete diagnostic records at this appointment as well. This consists of plaster study models of the teeth, photographs of the patient’s face and teeth and any diagnostically necessary x-rays.

Consultation

After I have evaluated your records, we will be happy to further discuss your treatment in detail, including what to expect at the upcoming appointments, patient responsibilities during orthodontic treatment, and any financial arrangements for your particular case, including insurance concerns.

Ride, Run, and…Get Muddy!

Bike? Check! Running shoes? Check! Ready to crawl through the mud? BORN READY!!!

On August 17th our very own Sonia and Dana participated in the Muddy Buddy Race! The Race involved a 6-7 mile running and biking course, 5 obstacle courses, and everybody’s favorite GIANT MUD PIT that participants must pass through together before finishing the race. Sonia and Dana ran, biked, climbed, crawled, and got down and dirty in the mud. Our two athletes finished the race in an amazing 1 hour and 20 minutes. If you participated in the Muddy Buddy Race I would love to hear about your experience – who knows, maybe next year you’ll get in on the action, and get a little muddy!!!

Metal Braces

Conventional Metal Braces
Conventional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

Gold Braces
Gold braces are similar to conventional metal braces in many ways. They are made of stainless steel, but are uniquely coated in gold. The gold coating may be considered a more cosmetic option than conventional metal braces. And, the cost of gold braces is surprisingly comparable to most clear braces.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper-front teeth than on lower teeth.

The best age for your children to be treated by an orthodontist.

It's best for the orthodontist to see children by age seven to advise if orthodontic treatment is required and the best time for that patient to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding and other problems can be evaluated. When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.

Cost of Orthodontic Treatment

The cost of treatment depends on the complexity of the patient's treatment. You will be able to discuss fees and payment options at your initial appointment or new patient exam. We have payment plans to suit different budgets and try to work individually with each family to design a payment plan to fit their needs. We also accept assignment from most insurance plans, and file all necessary paperwrok to the insurance company on your behalf. We work hard to make orthodontics affordable to everyone.

Fees

In an effort to keep orthodontic fees down while maintaining the highest level of professional care, we have established this financial policy:

We offer 0% financing to all patients.
If full payment is made at the onset of treatment, we will offer a fee discount.
To fit your individual needs, financial arrangements can be made to extend your payments over the duration of treatment.
For your convenience, we accept payment by Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. We will be happy to hold your credit card information on file and automatically charge your payment to your credit card on your due date each month. We can also set up an automatic withdrawl of your monthly payment from your checking or savings account at your request.
In cases of serious delinquency, treatment may be discontinued, although we will make every effort to accommodate patients with temporary difficulties.

Insurance

If you have insurance, we will help you to determine the coverage you have available. After insurance benefits have been assigned to our office, arrangements will be made for you to pay the remaining portion of the treatment fee (see above). Professional care is provided to you, our patient, and not to an insurance company. Thus, the insurance company is responsible to the patient and the patient is responsible to the doctor. We will help in every way we can in filing your claims and handling insurance questions from our office on your behalf.

I grew up in Hudson, Ohio, a small town southeast of Cleveland. After attending the University of Dayton for a B.S. in biochemistry receiving his DDS at Case Western Reserve University, he completed his orthodontic residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon.

My wife Sonia and I moved to Colorado to take part in the year-round outdoor activities. Our daughters, Amelia & Zoe, enjoy camping, hiking, biking, skiing, and snowshoeing in addition to motorsports, woodworking and simply spending time as a family.

The Kohrs Orthodontics team takes an active role in the communities near both offices, sponsoring youth sports, school activities, and charitable organizations, as well as taking part in town festivals and other community events.

In addition to taking special care of you and your family, I have a special interest in treating children with cleft lip and palate as well as other cranio-facial issues. I am a member of the Kaiser Permanente Cranio-Facial Team, which provides a full range of health services to children with cranio-facial birth defects including cleft lip and palate. I am also active in the Metropolitan Denver Dental Society’s Give Kids a Smile Program and the Domestic Violence Dental Care Program.

Now in Denver, my professional affiliations include the American Association of Orthodontics, American Board of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Colorado Dental Association, Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists, and Rocky Mountain Dental Study Club. I have served as a council member for the Colorado Dental Association, as a delegate for the Metro Denver Dental Society and as an exhibitor liaison for the Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists. I have also enjoyed an appointment as Associate Professor at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry.

The 2008 Top Dentist list is comprehensive of more than 400 dentists and specialists throughout Colorado. Dentists and specialists were selected for the list based off of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, the use of new techniques and technology and, of course, the end result.

In order to select the top dentists and facilities, 5280 opened its survey to every metro-area dentist that is listed on the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Web site. The survey listed a variety of specialties and asked the dentists who they would trust to treat him or her in each of the categories.

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque – the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to decay – and because they are easier to keep clean. Plaque can lead to cavities and can increase the risk of gum disease.

What is it?

Invisalign uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing. So you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign is made with 3-D computer imaging technology, and has been proven effective. More than 70% of orthodontists in the U.S. and Canada are certified to treat with Invisalign.

Why would I want it?

Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. No metal and wires usually means you spend less time in your doctor's office getting adjustments. Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start, so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

How does it work?

You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position I have prescribed. You'll visit my staff and I about once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages nine to fifteen months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between eighteen and thirty, but both will vary from case to case.
